My parents grew up in NE Tennessee. My grandfather owned a Western Auto store in Erwin, TN, and had a lot of customers "that didn't come down out of the mountains very often". One time my mom rode with him to deliver a battery-operated radio that had been ordered. She said they drove up in the mountains until the road didn't go up anymore, then he put the radio on his back and they climbed "straight up for a long time" until they reached a level spot and the cabin.
