The hard part is defending it from the city of Orlando who is determined to fill it full of concrete. They continually want to tart it up with signs, overlooks, concrete and plants like perennial peanut. The District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan is uninformed and incompetent. The original flow of the creek was from Lake Underhill. History says it flowed through our local lakes and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico. My beloved neighbor who is deceased, got married on the bridge when it was wood. Such an Orlando jewel.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371057245307283394.post-64852954848930397332012-06-20T11:08:52.214-04:002012-06-20T11:08:52.214-04:00Run-off has messed up many of the city's water...Run-off has messed up many of the city's water bodies including the lake I live on...Rick Kilbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08515464705852515607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371057245307283394.post-12204868070537986482012-06-20T08:55:21.006-04:002012-06-20T08:55:21.006-04:00Yes, the city views it as a drainage ditch. If only we had caring elected officials the creek and park would be restored not mutilated by their filthy stormwater and pavement. My son grew up along the banks of the creek when it was nice.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371057245307283394.post-83868570429843040632012-06-01T17:15:38.144-04:002012-06-01T17:15:38.144-04:00Thank you for the information regarding Fern Creek...Thank you for the information regarding Fern Creek. Do you happen to know where the spring water diverted to the counter well goes and what are it's uses? In the early sixties, the City of Orlando sunk a counter well next to it and stopped the spring flow. Since then, it has been nothing but a drainage ditch. I grew up next to the ravine on Ridgewood and remember when it had flowing spring water.Jeff Hopkinsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371057245307283394.post-29117690244817393902011-06-19T21:18:02.678-04:002011-06-19T21:18:02.678-04:00Someone kindly posted a link to this blog post in ...Someone kindly posted a link to this blog post in the Facebook group "Orlando before Disney" and I am delighted to read it. Fern Creek park was my playground as a child in the 1950s. We lived at the Robinson St/Fern Creek intersection and I spent as much time as I could, climbing the trees, fishing the water for tadpoles and running the course of the park. Our weekly Brownie and Girl Scout meetings and several camp ins were held at the "Girl Scout Little House," over the years. It holds many of my fondest memories of childhood. I'm sure the weight of my body helped push down those long oak tree limbs as we rode them like horses. We also swung from the palm tree fronds calling out like Tarzan of the Apes as we swung out over the chasm and dropped into the water or onto the grass. Thank you for sharing this love so eloquently in words and pictures.Pat Curryhttp://www.catpurry.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-371057245307283394.post-16696867045594952932011-01-10T14:59:00.228-05:002011-01-10T14:59:00.228-05:00I was married in this park because I fell in love ...I was married in this park because I fell in love with it when I first moved to Orlando 1994. I met and fell in love with my husband in 2000 and married in 2007 and have been coming to the park every year for pictures for our wedding anniversaries. I absolutely love this park for its beauty and its history.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
