Land of the Leapin' Bass

We drove from Gainesville to Welaka almost every weekend when I was kid. The trip was an hour and twenty minutes and we did the drive enough times to have every bit of the road memorized. Between East Palatka and Welaka was the old bridge at Dunn's Creek and a big sign that said "Bass Capital of the World." On the sign was the image of a giant Largemouth Bass jumping out of the water. This image was an icon, found on motels, fish camps, stickers and decals, boats, cars, and almost anything fishing related. I don't see it as much as I used to, but the leapin' bass are still out there, standing on their tails, teasing kids like me into spending their allowance on fishing tackle.
